Sony Launches PlayStation Family App for Parental Controls on PS4 and PS5
With its own mobile app for Android and iOS, Sony is improving the toolkit available to parents for controlling their children's PlayStation use. Settings can be adjusted more easily, and additional features offer greater security.
Sony's new mobile app, PlayStation Family, is now available in many countries for Android and iOS. In terms of functionality, the features are reminiscent of well-known parental control apps for mobile platforms such as Google's FamilyLink. This makes it quick and easy to set usage times and durations. Previously, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 required the relevant settings to be configured on the console or, in some cases, in the PlayStation account.
Typical use cases such as granting bonus playtime can now be managed via the app. The same applies to age restrictions on content, spending limits, and social interaction options.
The PlayStation Family app offers new features such as real-time screening of what children are currently playing. However, it appears that the app is primarily about making the existing options offered by PS4 and PS5 to parents in terms of parental controls better and more convenient to use.
