First, the good news: in both North America and Europe, a game released in 2025 has made it to number one on the list of most downloaded games on PlayStation Store. But apart from that, the lists of top downloads on PlayStation Store published by Sony Interactive Entertainment a few days ago reveal a problem that is prevalent throughout the industry and not just symptomatic of the PlayStation platform: New games, and especially new IPs, are having a hard time. Grand Theft Auto V, which was supposed to be replaced in 2025 by its long-awaited successor, ranks third in North America and second in Europe among the most downloaded titles on PlayStation Store. That alone says a lot.
But it becomes even clearer when you look at the frontrunners and the rest of the top ten. At the top of the list in Europe is – how could it be otherwise – EA Sports FC 26. And it's not really surprising that its predecessor made it to number three in Europe.
In North America, the picture is very similar, only with different sports. Basketball triumphs with NBA 2K26. EA's football games EA Sports College Football 26 and EA Sports Madden NFL 26 land in fourth and fifth place. In between is Battlefield 6, which ranks fifth in Europe.
Other IPs in the top ten include Minecraft, Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed. Genuine new brands such as Arc Raiders and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 just manage to make it into the top ten. Perhaps 2026 will finally bring more successful new IPs...
