An evaluation by the German Economic Institute (Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft) shows that two thirds of German job listings referencing game dev skills in 2024 came from companies outside the games industry.

The German Economic Institute (Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft) has released an evaluation of almost 5.000 job offerings from 2024 that list games industry job specifications. The evaluation sees that 64 per cent of job offerings that look for game-development specific skills are not coming from inside the games industry, but from other economy branches like the automotive industry, consulting, architecture and IT.

Business service providers alone advertised 23 percent of all jobs requiring candidates to have gaming skills. The largest group, accounting for 6 percent of all advertisements, was management consultancies. Engineering and architecture firms, which accounted for 4 percent of the online job advertisements surveyed, use applications from the gaming environment to visualize buildings in digital form in three dimensions, for example.

Workers from the games industry in European countries have been going through some challenging years. For example, in the recent worker study by Values Value and InGame Job, almost of third of workers that experienced layoffs in the last year had been looking for a new job for more than six months. Other industries that are looking for specific skills applied in game development are attractive targets for game workers that have been laid off or are not satisfied with their current job.
