FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Bavaria’s funding agent that is connected to the State Chancellery and the Digital Ministry, is updating its XR funding guidelines for the coming time. The updates mark several big enhancements for projects funded, namely these three:
- The XR funding area now also includes “immersive audiovisual content” such as XR films, making more projects eligible.
- Development funding will in future be granted as a subsidy rather than a conditionally repayable loan.
- The funding caps have been tripled. The maximum possible funding amount for production is now €300,000, up from €100,000 previously. For development funding, the amount has increased from €30,000 to €100,000. This makes it possible to submit projects with higher budgets.
FFF Managing Director Dorothee Erpenstein: "Bavaria has established itself as one of the leading locations for extended realities. FFF-funded projects are celebrating worldwide success at major festivals from Venice to Rotterdam to Paris. With the updated XR guideline, we are continuing on this path and sending a clear signal for a future field at the interface of film, media art, and technology. We see Bavaria as a place where XR is not just a gimmick, but has the potential to bring together culture and innovation at the highest level and create immersive experiences that set new international standards."
On February 5, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., the XR Funding Department will provide an information evening about the current guidelines at an event with XR Hub Bavaria in Munich. In addition to FFF Bayern, Creative Europe Desk Munich and Start Into Media will also present support opportunities for XR experiences.
